A proper road trip refuses to be rushed — but a great one also has to fit into the vacation time most of us actually have. These seven-day routes are built around that tension: each one captures the feeling of a much longer journey, the kind where the landscape keeps changing outside your window hour after hour, while staying entirely doable in a single week behind the wheel.
Norwegian Fjords: Bergen to North Cape (5-6 driving days)
Start in Bergen, wind north through the Geirangerfjord, cross into the Arctic Circle, and keep pushing until you reach Nordkapp — the North Cape. Watch the scenery reinvent itself every few hours: fjords give way to mountains, mountains give way to Arctic tundra.

Coastline gives way to hairpin mountain roads, which give way to villages mainstream tourism has largely passed by. None of it comes at the cost of a punishing driving day.

Head out from Barcelona through the mountain passes into Andorra, then continue across France's Pyrenean passes — Aspin, Tourmalet, Aubisque — before rolling into Toulouse. Road quality stays excellent the whole way, the scenery rarely lets up, and those remote high passes are the kind of driving that sticks in memory long after the trip ends.
Must-stop locations:
- Andorra la Vella — duty-free shopping and a base for exploring the high Pyrenean valleys
- Col du Tourmalet — the Tour de France's most famous climb, with sweeping ridge-line views
- Col d'Aubisque — a scenic high pass linking to Tourmalet via the dramatic Cirque du Litor road
- Cirque de Gavarnie — a natural amphitheater of cliffs and waterfalls, a short hike from the car park

Croatian Coastal Route: Zadar to Dubrovnik (4 driving days)
Follow the Adriatic Coast south from Zadar through Dalmatia to Dubrovnik. Detour toward the island ferries — Vis, Korčula, Mljet — and let the trip spill out onto the water for a day or two. This is Mediterranean coastline at its most dramatic, curve after curve.
Don't miss:
- Krka National Park — waterfalls and swimming pools just inland from Šibenik
- Split's Diocletian's Palace — a Roman-era palace that's still lived in, now the beating heart of the old town
- Korčula's old town — a walled peninsula with narrow herringbone streets, said to be Marco Polo's birthplace
- Ston — oyster farms and Europe's second-longest defensive walls, just before Dubrovnik
- Dubrovnik's city walls — the full ramparts walk overlooking the terracotta rooftops and Adriatic
Swiss Alpine Passes: Zürich to Milan (5 driving days)
Drive south from Zürich over the Gotthard Pass, through the Saint-Gotthard tunnel, and down into the Italian lakes. Detour through Andermatt and the Susten Pass along the way, and finish in Milan or on the shores of Lake Como. Every stretch is mountain road, and every stretch earns the drive.
Must-stop locations:
- Andermatt — a resort village at the crossroads of several Alpine passes, good for a lunch stop
- Gotthard Pass old road (Tremola) — the historic cobblestone hairpin route over the summit
- Susten Pass — glacier views from the road connecting Uri and Bern cantons
- Lugano — a lakeside city near the Italian border, worth a walk along the promenade
- Lake Como's Bellagio — the classic lakeside town where the trip can wind down before Milan
Scotland North Coast: Edinburgh to John o' Groats (5 driving days)
Scotland's North Coast 500 runs from Edinburgh up to John o' Groats, the northernmost point on the mainland. The views turn genuinely wild the further north you get — sweeping coastline, mountain passes, small towns that tourist infrastructure hasn't really touched yet.
Along the way:
- Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle — the famous loch, with the castle's ruins standing on its shore near Inverness

Drive inland from Málaga through Andalusia to Granada — worth a stop for the Alhambra alone — then east to the Almería coast. Mountain roads, whitewashed villages, exceptional food, and noticeably fewer crowds than you'll find further north in Spain.

- Alhambra, Granada — the Moorish palace and gardens; book tickets well ahead in summer
- Nerja and its Balcón de Europa — a cliffside viewpoint over the Costa Tropical, on the way east
- Alpujarras villages, like Capileira and Trevélez — whitewashed hill towns tucked into the Sierra Nevada
- Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park — volcanic coastline and empty beaches near Almería
- Tabernas Desert — Europe's only true desert, dotted with old spaghetti-western film sets
Road Trip Essentials
- Plan on four to five hours of driving a day. That leaves room for spontaneous detours and keeps the drive itself enjoyable rather than draining.
- Book accommodation ahead of time. Popular route towns fill up fast in summer.
- Rent your car locally. International rental chains tend to run expensive; local rentals — especially in Eastern Europe — are usually cheaper and just as reliable.
- Build in flexibility. The best moments on a road trip are almost always the unplanned detour.
