Island-hopping sounds effortlessly romantic right up until you're standing on a dock waiting for a ferry that supposedly runs "most days," or stuck on an island where every room is booked solid. Get the logistics right, though, and it becomes one of the most rewarding ways to travel — a new horizon, a new harbor, a new rhythm every few days.
Greek Islands: Cyclades Route
Athens → Mykonos → Paros → Antiparos → Naxos → Amorgos
Ferry times run 2–4 hours between islands, and the full route takes about two weeks (closer to ten days if you keep the pace brisk). Along the way: whitewashed villages tumbling down hillsides, beach after beach, unfussy local food, and noticeably fewer crowds once you reach Amorgos.
Best timed for June or early September — July and August book out fast.
Croatian Islands: Dalmatian Route
Split → Hvar → Korčula → Mljet → Dubrovnik
Ferry times here are shorter, 1–3 hours, and the whole loop fits comfortably into a week. Expect pine forests running down to the water, glass-clear sea, good local wine, and medieval old towns at nearly every stop.
Boat schedules tend to be more dependable here than in Greece, and every island on this route has accommodation ranging from simple hostels to serious luxury resorts.
Spanish Balearic Islands: Mallorca to Menorca
Mallorca → Ibiza → Formentera → Menorca
Short hops of 1–2 hours connect these four, and a week is enough to get a real feel for each. Beaches and hidden coves show up throughout the route; Ibiza brings the famous nightlife if that's what you're after, while the smaller islands trade it for noticeably quieter corners.
Summer is unquestionably peak season here, so book well ahead — the trade-off is weather that's reliably excellent through July and August.
Portugal's Island Loops: Azores
São Miguel → Santa Maria → Terceira
Ferries run 2–4 hours between islands, and a week gives you a real taste of all three. Expect volcanic thermal springs, serious hiking, an authentic slice of Portuguese culture, and beaches that stay uncrowded even in peak season.
Summer suits this route particularly well: warm water, stable weather, and ferries that run reliably.
Italy and France: Riviera Islands
Nice → Îles d'Hyères → Corsica → Elba → Portovenere
Ferry times stay short, 1–2 hours, and the route fills a week nicely. The coastline stays dramatic throughout, the culture shifts noticeably between French and Italian stops, and the food is excellent regardless of which side of the border you're on.
Accommodation fills quickly by July, so if flexibility matters more than peak-season energy, June is the easier month to travel.
Generic Island-Hopping Strategy
Research ferry schedules before anything else. Which islands run daily connections? Which run every other day? Which shift to a seasonal schedule entirely? This alone should shape your route.
Book accommodation two to three days ahead, not weeks out. Flexibility is the whole point of island-hopping — don't lock yourself into a rigid plan before you've even left.
Spend at least two to three nights per island. One night is just logistics; two nights is when you actually start experiencing a place.
Build in variety. Mix beach days with village wandering, quieter islands with livelier ones, swimming stops with something more cultural.
Confirm your bed before you book your ferry. Plenty of travelers lock in ferry tickets first and scramble for a room later — that's backwards, and it's how trips fall apart.
