Late April to June and September are ideal — warm without the summer heat that settles over the plain. From late June into early September the Roman theatre stages its Opera Open season, and autumn brings the museum and dance festivals, so book earlier if you are coming for a festival weekend.
Getting around
There's no metro and you won't need one: the Old Town, Kapana and the main pedestrian street sit within a fifteen-minute walk of each other. What the map hides is the gradient — the Old Town is a cobbled climb, and wheeled luggage on those stones is a genuinely bad twenty minutes. Buses from Sofia arrive at the station south of the centre, a ten-minute walk or a short taxi from most places you'd sleep. Taxis are cheap; use an app.
