Pamporovo resort
The hotels around the two lift stations, Studenets and Malina, where you ski from the door and everything else arrives by shuttle or car. Convenient and comfortable, and quiet in a slightly empty way once the lifts close.

A small town ten kilometres north with its own ski area, the longest run in the Rhodopes and a fraction of Pamporovo's bustle. Marginally cheaper than the resort, and it has shops and a couple of proper restaurants.

Good to know
- Almost every run drops off Snezhanka, and almost all of them are gentle — which is why Pamporovo is the standard choice for learning and a poor one for anyone wanting steep terrain. Confident skiers prefer Chepelare's longer descent or go to Bansko.
- The resort has no centre. If you want to walk out to a restaurant in the evening rather than eat in your hotel, stay in Chepelare or Smolyan — this catches people out every season.
- Snezhanka tower above the resort is the one unmissable thing here, and it is just as good in summer: on a clear day the view reaches the Aegean.
- Lift passes are cheaper bought for several consecutive days and cheaper still outside the New Year and February peaks; the two-week gap either side of the school holidays is the quiet, cheap window.
When to visit
The ski season runs from mid-December to early April, with New Year and the February school holiday the dearest weeks by far. Summer is a quieter and much cheaper second season for walking in the Rhodopes, when the resort's hotels drop to roughly half their winter rate. April, May and November are the genuinely empty months, and many hotels simply close.
Getting around
Plovdiv is the nearest city at around eighty kilometres, about an hour and a half by car on a winding road that demands winter tyres in season. Buses run from Plovdiv and Smolyan several times a day and stop at the resort's hotels. Within Pamporovo a ski bus links the hotels to the lift stations, but evenings are the problem rather than mornings — if you are staying in Smolyan or Chepelare, check the last bus back before you book dinner.

It is one of the best places in Bulgaria to learn. The runs are wide, gentle and sunny, and the ski schools are used to complete beginners. Confident skiers tend to find it small after a few days.
Should I stay in the resort or in Smolyan?
The resort if you want to ski from the door and do not mind eating in your hotel. Smolyan if you want a town around you and a much lower bill, and you are willing to travel fifteen kilometres each way.
How much does a night cost?
As a guide, for two people sharing: around EUR 140 a night in the resort during an ordinary January week, rising to about EUR 195 over New Year. Chepelare is a little cheaper, Smolyan roughly half. In summer the same resort rooms fall to about EUR 90-100.
