The lowest terrace, where the big hotels open straight onto the sand. You pay the most here and walk the least, which in a resort built on a hill is worth more than it sounds.

Good to know
- Check how far up the hill a property actually sits before booking. Listings call everything close to the beach, and the difference between the first terrace and the fourth is a steep ten-minute climb each way, several times a day.
- Golden Sands is the priciest stretch of the northern coast in peak season — July rooms cost roughly half as much again as the same week in June, when the weather is much the same but the sea is still cool.
- Aladzha Monastery, in the park behind the resort, is the one thing here with nothing to do with the beach — three kilometres uphill, ten minutes by taxi or ninety on foot. Go early, before the tour buses.
- Varna is eighteen kilometres south and easy by bus, which makes a rainy day recoverable — museums and restaurants at city rather than resort prices.
When to visit
June to mid-September, with July and August the most expensive by a clear margin. September is the value month here: the sea is at its warmest after a summer of heating, the crowds have gone, and prices fall by roughly a third from the July peak. Most hotels close from late October until May, so the resort out of season is a row of shuttered fronts.
Getting around
Varna airport is about twenty kilometres away, roughly half an hour by taxi — or bus 409, which runs from the airport through the city to the resort in season. Buses 9 and 109 link the resort with Varna all day for about a euro and a half, quicker than driving in August. Inside the resort everything is walkable, but that includes gradients — some hotels run a shuttle down to the beach, worth asking about if you book on an upper terrace.

Golden Sands is greener, hillier and quieter, with Varna close by for a city day. Sunny Beach is flatter, louder and has the bigger nightlife and water parks. Golden Sands also costs more in July.
Is the hill really a problem?
For most people it is a minor nuisance and a better view. With a pushchair, a wheelchair or limited mobility it is a real constraint, and worth paying the beachfront premium to avoid.
How much does a night cost?
As a guide, for two people sharing: around EUR 185 a night in July, EUR 150 in June and EUR 125 in September, so timing matters more here than in most Bulgarian resorts. Kranevo runs roughly a quarter cheaper across the season.
